Save a ChatGPT answer as a clean PDF

To turn a ChatGPT answer into a PDF, copy it with the copy button under the answer — it copies Markdown — then paste it here and download. Tables, code, lists and formulas come out as a formatted document with page numbers, not a screenshot of a chat.

How to export a ChatGPT answer

  1. Copy the answer

    Use the copy icon under the response. Selecting the text by hand copies the formatted version and loses the Markdown.

  2. Paste it here

    The preview updates as you paste. Add a # Title line at the top if the answer has none — it names the PDF and fills the header.

  3. Download the PDF

    Choose A4 or Letter, add a footer such as “Confidential” in Page setup, and download.

What usually breaks, and what happens here

  • Tables

    Printed from the browser, tables are cut mid-row. Here every row stays whole and the header row repeats on each page.

  • Code

    Long lines vanish off the page. Here they wrap inside the block, with syntax highlighting kept.

  • Formulas

    LaTeX between dollar signs renders as typeset math instead of raw symbols.

  • Chat clutter

    No avatars, buttons or sidebar — only the answer, typeset as a document.

Exporting a whole conversation

Cropmark formats one document at a time. To keep several answers together, paste them into the same document and separate them with headings such as ## Question 2; the headings become PDF bookmarks, so the result is easy to navigate.

Browser extensions that save entire chats exist too. Cropmark is for the moment when an answer has to read like a document you can send to someone.

Questions

Does it work with every ChatGPT plan and model?

Yes. Cropmark only needs the Markdown text of the answer, which the copy button produces on every plan.

Why does my pasted answer look like plain text?

It was probably selected and copied by hand, which copies formatted text without Markdown. Use the copy button under the answer instead.

Is the conversation sent to Cropmark?

Only the text you paste, and only when you download. It is rendered in memory and discarded.

Does it work with other assistants?

Any assistant that writes Markdown works the same way, and most do. See Claude to PDF for long technical answers.

Is Cropmark made by OpenAI?

No. Cropmark is an independent tool and is not affiliated with OpenAI.
